Tilley studied art at the University of Durham and worked as a graphic designer in the 1950s. He was a lost graphic talent, having given up graphic design in 1968 to pursue a career as a film scriptwriter. He was a successful science fiction author and screenwriter and travelled widely in the United States, falling in love with its vast landscapes which informed much of his writing.
