Gay was elected a member of the Bristol Savages in 1928. These Bristol-based artists spent friendly evenings in Ernest Ehlers studio, working and talking. Numbers grew and by 1904 this led to the official founding of the Bristol Savages and similar weekly meetings continue to be held weekly, however, the name has since changed to Bristol 1904 Arts.
