James Greig was born in Arbroath in 1861 and moved to London in 1891 to study art. He produced black and white illustrations for a number of magazines, including Punch and The Sketch. He produced monographs on Gainsborough and Raeburn and edited the diaries of the landscape painter Joseph Farington (1747-1821). Greig also found time to paint landscapes and figurative subjects and was elected Member of the Royal Society of British Artists in 1898.
